January Results Round-Up: Medals for Junior Fencers

Romanian Junior Championships

Florin Mirica fenced in the junior epee event at the Romanian junior epee championships. He won five of his six poule matches. He had a bye through the 64, then eliminated Raul Tufan, Francesco Nitu, Stefan Popa, and Gabriel Vasilescu to reach the finals, where he lost to Martin Mezinger.

Challenge des Jeunes Maitres

Congratulations to Solu Ngoka, who took first place in the U15 category at the ASPTT Challenge des Jeunes Maitre Jean Tura.

Leon Paul BRC Junior Foil

Seven Salle Paul foilists competed in the junior BRC on home soil. 

Amelia Ward won seven and lost three across the two rounds of poules. She had a bye through the round of 32, then defeated Meyra Bakla in the 16 before being eliminated by Jing in the last 8. Jing Zhao went six and three in the poule stages. She also had a bye through the 32. She won against Layla Lang in the 16 and Amelia in the 8, then lost her semi final against Nathalie Culkin.

Ashley Crees also went nine and one in poules. He received a bye through the 64, defeated Ethan Li, Ali Al-Mohsin, and Danielus Juras but then lost in the semi-final to Alex Culkin. 

Congratulations to Jing and Ashley for their bronze medals.

Leon Paul Men’s Epee Open

Salle Paul had eight fencers enter the men's epee open at the Leon Paul centre. 

Satya Gunput won all his fights in poules. He defeated Qunhao Ma in the 32 and Alessio in the 16, then was knocked out by Ben Andrews in the last 8. 

Aurelio Calipa won five poule matches and lost one. He won against Samuel Godbehere, Alexander Terry, and Finn Russell before losing his semi-finals to Antoine Belot. 

Congratulations to Aurelio for his bronze medal. Thank you Oana and Roman for coaching the event.

Leon Paul BRC Junior Men’s Epee

Leon Paul's junior men's epee BRC took place the day after the epee open. Five epeeists from Salle Paul took part. 

Locke Tsang won five and lost five fights in poules. He won against Calum Anderson in the 64, Jack Zino in the 32, and Oleg Shkarovskyy in the 16 before losing in the last 8 to William Paice.

Alessio Bazzocchi won seven of ten poule bouts. He won against Carlos Han, Alexander Terry, Jack Beckley, and Oliver Golanowski, but then lost his semi-final to Wilfred Houston-Bronwn.

Congratulations to Alessio for his bronze medal.

BVF Guildford Open

The annual Guildford Veterans Open took place in Guildford on the 6th and 7th of January. We had nine competitors across the epee, foil and sabre competitions.

Graham Paul competed in the foil event on Sunday. He won five of seven matches in the poule unique of eight. He won against Paul Harden in the round of 8, then lost to Gyorgy Lipton of Hungary in the semi finals.

LPJS London Epee

Cyrus Lee won his event, the U14 Boys Epee. He won four and lost three in the poules. In the tableau, he defeated Leo Polozov, Alec Hargreaves, Lucas Heath, and finally Matt Xiao in the finals.

In the U10 Boys Epee, Eli Newsome won six and lost two in poules. He won his DEs against Oscar Varkey and Odin Cheung before losing in the semi finals to Manfred Zheng.

In the U10 Girls Epee, Kaeto Ngoka won all her fights in poules, then defeated Zoya Siddiqui and Eva Savic in the finals. 

In the U17 Boys Epee, Ayman Chow won six of seven poule matches. He won his last 8 against Oscar Casado Robinson and Maximilian Woolf. Solu Ngoka won all six poule matches. After his bye through the last 8, he won against Alexander Gumbley in the semi finals and Ayman in the finals.

Congratulations to Eli for his bronze medal, Ayman for his silver, and Cyrus, Kaeto, and Solu for the gold medals.
