November Results Round-Up

A belated round-up of our fencers’ fantastic results in November.

Welsh Open

Twenty-one Leon Paul fencers took part in the Welsh Open across six weapons over the weekend. We have just concentrated on the medal winners but well done to all those who make the trip to Cardiff.

On Saturday, in the women's epee, Rachael Lever won five of six poule fights. After a bye through the 128, she won against Maya Cobban, Gabrielle Holland, Lydia Stanier, Reya Farlam, Alex Bousfield, and finally Alexandra Powell to win the gold medal. 

On Sunday, in the men's epee, Florin Mirica went five and one in poules. He had a bye through the 128, then defeated Jonathan Thornton, Cador Beautyman, Wilfred Houston-Brown, and Jem Green to make the semi-finals where he was eliminated by Idiris Ali.

Congratulations to Florin for his bronze medal and Rachael their gold medals.

Madrid Veterans

Congratulations to Mariette Mason who took the gold medal in vet-60 women's epee event in Madrid. She started the day off with one win and five losses in the 50-60 mixed poules. Ranked fifth in the tableau, victories over Ana Ruiz Diaz, Laurence Labrunie, and Karen Grant saw Mariette claim first place.

LPJS Bath Foil

Arthur O'Donnell and Tudor Prutica were the only Salle Paul fencers competing in the foil LPJS in Bath. Tudor won four of his six poule matches, Arthur won all five of his. Both fencers won their matches in the 32 and the 16, then drew each other in the last 8. After his win against Arthur, Tudor went on to defeat Ralph Jenkins and Tristan Ching to claim the gold medal.

Congratulations to Tudor for winning the U13 boys' event. Our thanks to Olga for her coaching at the event.

Elite Epee Manchester Senior

Aleksandra Pedraszewska and Kaya Burrows competed in the women's senior open. Kaya won four and lost one match in poules. After her bye through the 64, she defeated Alexandra Bousfield, Katherine Townsend, and Crinan Potter to reach the semifinals. There, she faced Francesca Cavallo and was eliminated 15-13. 

James Gowen and Will Ferguson represented Salle Paul in the men's event on Sunday. James won all six of his poule matches. After his bye, he defeated Nicholas Murphy, Nathan Foster, and Liam Winstanley; he was then eliminated in the semifinals, also by Tom Hoffman. 

Congratulations to Kaya and James for their bronze medals.

Elite Epee Cadet BRC

A cadet BRC was run in tandem with the senior opens; seven Salle Paul cadets competed. 

In the Men’s event, Ayman Chow, Casey Jones, Solu Ngoka, Stanley Leech and Alessio Bazzocchi competed. Solu, Stanley and Alessio all successfully reached the last 8 of the competition before being knocked out.

In the Women’s event, Kushi Khetani and Emma Mitzova competed. Emma Mitzova won all ten of her poule fights. After a bye through the 64, victories over Lily-Mae Lancaster Evans, Isabella d'Abbracio, and Julia Tsimelzon. She was unable to prevail in the semi finals against Kira Grahamslaw, losing 15-13.

Elite Epee Junior series

Only two Salle Paul fencers competed in the youth division of the Elite Epee. 

In the U12 girls, Xanthe won six of her seven poule matches. She then beat Emily de Bono and Macy Roper to make the finals, where she was defeated by Eliana Yunusi-Parikh. 

In the U14 boys, Solu lost one of his five poule matches. He received a bye through the 16, then defeated Lorenzo Brunellesi, Thomas Robinson, and Bintong Wang to win the competition. 

Congratulations to Xanthe for her silver medal, and Solu for his gold.

LPJS Hamlet Sabre

The LPJS Hamlet Sabre took place in Stratford-upon-Avon over the weekend; sever sabreurs training at the Project were in attendance.

In the U11 Girls Sabre, Charlotte Geater, Ariana Rashid and Sophia Chiesa competed. Sophia Chiesa won all of her nine poule matches. In the DEs, she won against Irina Solar, teammate Ariana Rashid, Jemima Warwick, and Isabel Wong to claim the gold medal.

In the U11 Boys Sabre, we had Arthur Chen, Aaron Zhang and Matthew Yeremeyev competing. Matthew Yeremeyev went four and one in his poule. After his bye, he defeated Natanil Slowiakowski, Evan Talbot, and William Thomas to make the finals. He lost the final 10-5 to Joseph Bennett. 

Congratulations to Matthew for his silver medal, and Sophia for her gold. Thank you to Can for coaching the young sabreurs at the LPJS.

Leon Paul U14 Open

Three youth foilists took part in the Leon Paul U14 Foil Open.

Arthur O'Donnell went two and four in poules. After his bye through the 32, he defeated Michael Malasenkovs, Ralph Jenkins, and Eden Leung to reach the final. There, he lost to Dominik Juras, and took home the silver medal. 

Congratulations to Arthur for his silver medal.
