Flurry of international medals for Salle Paul in February

IWAS European Championships

Project fencer Gemma Collis qualified for the IWAS European championships in Paris. 

In the sabre competition, she won two and lost three matches in poules. Qualifying for the main draw, her first DE was against Breus of Ukraine; Gemma lost 15-11.

In the epee event, she had an exemption from the poule round. In the tableau, she eliminated Holder of GBR, Kelman of Israel, and Rodriguez Menendez of Spain to reach the finals against Breus of Ukraine, which Gemma lost in a nail-biting final 14-15.

Huge congratulations to Gemma for her brilliant European Championships silver.

Vladimir Mazuranic Memorial

Kaya Burrows won silver at the U23 EFC Open event in Zagreb. She started with four wins and two losses in the poules. In the tableau, she defeated Ilic of Serbia, Sizoo of the Netherlands, Shevchenko of Ukraine, and Kerman of Serbia to reach the finals, which she lost to Praxmarer of Austria.
Congratulations to Kaya for her silver medal.

LPJS King’s Canterbury

Four fencers from Salle Paul competed in Canterbury over the weekend. The highlight performance came from Kaeto Ngoka. She won all her poule matches. She had a bye through the last 8, won against Marli Thompson in the semis and Bridget Chan in the finals.

Veterans Belgium and Netherlands

Four of ur veterans fencers took part in the Veteranentornooi Hallebardiers Veteran competition in Brugge.

Mariette won her competition in the Women’s Epee. She fenced a poule unique with mixed age veteran women, going 4v3d, her three defeats all 5/4. Mariette reversed her fortunes in the DE, with three consecutive 10/9 final hit victories all against younger age group fencers, Sarah Hariga BEL, Nathalie Smets BEL and Veerle Ornelis BEL to win the gold medal.

London Youth Championships

Six Salle Paul fencers took part in the last London Region Youth championship event on Sunday.

BUCS Championships

As part of Nottingham University, Oliver Strange (team captain, here lifting the cup) and Florin Mirica have won the BUCS teams championships.
 
They faced off against Durham and the tallied score was tied at 113-113, but as Nottingham won both foil and epee they were crowned victors.

Challenge Wratislavia

Six LP Academy sabre fencers competed in the Wratislawa challenge in Poland. This is one of Europe’s biggest fencing competitions for age groups from U11 to U15.

 The star of the day was Matthew Yeremeyev, who took an amazing first place and the GOLD medal out of 59 entries, winning a nail-biting final 10-9. Well done to Matthew for his outstanding performance, and thanks to all the fencers and parents for their effort and commitment. Special thanks to coach Noah Rogerson⁩ who organised the team and coached all the fencers through their first international.

British Veterans Championships

Eleven Salle Paul veterans competed in the Veterans Championships in Manchester over the weekend. 

Hugh Kernohan won eight of his ten poule bouts. He won his matches against Gerry Toland, Tom Christ, Alex Agrenich, Chris Heaps and Will Miller to make the final, where he lost to 9-10.

Georgina Usher won all ten of her matches in poules. After a bye through the 32, she won against Fiona Haldane, Lindsay Bottoms, Sarah Budden, and Christine Steiner to win the competition.

Birmingham International

In the Epee, Georgina Usher won all six matches in poules. She won her tableau matches against Jenny Zhang, Lindsay Bottoms, Caroline Van Eldik, Louise Sadler, and Kate French to make the finals, where she won 15-9 against Charlie Follett. 

In the Sabre, Jess won the bronze medal. She won all six of her poule fights. She then had a bye before winning against teammate Cindy Ouyang, Ellen Robbins Wilkinson. She lost in the semi-final to Bethany Brierley.

Congratulations to Georgina for her gold medal and to Jess for her bronze medal.
