London wins Cadet Winton 2017
Posted on December 27, 2017
In a very exciting weekend of fencing over the weekend of 16th/17th December 2017, Amelia Middleton and Oliver Strange from Salle Paul were part of the winning London team at the 30th anniversary of the Cadet Winton team event. Set up in memory of the Winton brothers, Nicholas and Bobby, who fenced for England the Cadet Winton features six teams of fencers from each region across England (boys and girls teams in each of the three weapons). Each region fences against all the other regions in all the weapons across two intensive days of competition with the squad winning the most matches coming out on top. London, lead by Team Managers Neil Hutchison (formerly of Cobra Swords) and Sarah Ellis of Camden Fencing Club were victorious. (London has previously won on two other occasions across the 30 years and many of our Olympic fencers have competed at Cadet Winton).
Matthieu Pallud and Alexandra Bousfield from Leon Paul Epee also fenced alongside Amelia and Oliver in the Cadet Winton London team. Also from Salle Paul, Dawood Khan (pictured left) fenced for the South East.
The London fencers were accompanied by Salle Paul parent chaperones, Belinda and Mark Strange, with Sian Hughes Pollitt of FCL. The team were organised by Caroline Woollard of Salle Paul and Sian Hughes Pollitt of FCL and were supported by Leon Paul Epee and CoachHire.com.
Fencers were selected to compete for London from their GB rankings: for sabre by Sarah Ellis; for foil by Sian Hughes Pollitt and for epee by Caroline Woollard and Jon Willis.
